ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
MSAJCE's Department of Materials Science and Engineering is recognized throughout the materials community for its outstanding educational and research accomplishments. We help provide students with the tools, experience, and adaptability to prosper—not only as new graduates but also throughout their career.
Its continuing record of pioneering advances in engineering sciences and technologies stems from its ability to relate new developments and advances to engineering practice and its close relationship with industry. These advances are then incorporated in current teaching and research programs. Faculty and student research ranges from the purely scientific to applied studies and involves perspectives of chemistry, physics, electronics, the artistic and historical aspects of materials, design, and entrepreneurial ventures. Interests within the Department span the entire materials cycle from mining and refining of raw materials, to production and utilization of finished materials, and finally to disposal and recycling. There is a rich variety of problems of vital importance to the development of the science of metals, polymers, ceramics, glasses, electronic materials, biomedical materials, composites, and other materials awaiting solution. The Department has the theoretical and experimental resources available to attack these scientific and engineering problems successfully.

Materials Science and Engineering is a stimulating interdisciplinary field that can be linked with many important challenges such as energy, environment, communication, health and many others. The program of Materials Science and Engineering provides an in-depth education in a broad spectrum of material such as metals, ceramics, semiconductors, composites, polymers, and biomaterials, functional & aerospace materials and prepares students for careers in a variety of industries and research organizations, as well as for advanced studies in this field. The students learn how to fabricate, choose and manipulate the properties of various materials as well as to predict the behavior of various materials under different environmental conditions.
The field of materials is enormously wide but some of the most active research areas include energy harvesting and storage, solar cells, micro/nano electronic devices, optoelectronics, graphene, nanowires, bio-inspired nanostructured materials, cryogenic treatment of materials, electroactive materials, nanocomposites, and other multifunctional materials. We, at MSACE provide a platform for world-class research in materials for conventional, commercial, defense and strategic applications.
